Understanding the 4 C’s of Diamonds

Choosing a diamond is about more than simply size or price — it’s about finding the perfect balance of beauty, brilliance, and personal preference. Every diamond is unique, and its quality is evaluated using the internationally recognized 4 C’s:Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight. Understanding these characteristics will help you make a confident and informed decision when selecting your diamond.

Cut

Cut is often considered the most important of the 4 C’s because it has the greatest impact on a diamond’s sparkle and overall beauty. A diamond’s cut refers to how precisely it has been shaped and faceted by a master cutter. When a diamond is cut well, light enters the stone, reflects internally, and returns through the top to create brilliance, fire, and scintillation.

Even a diamond with exceptional colour and clarity can appear dull if it is poorly cut. At Inglis Jewellers, we place a strong emphasis on beautifully cut diamonds that maximize brilliance and create the eye-catching sparkle diamonds are known for.

Color

Diamond colour evaluates how colourless a white diamond appears. The grading scale begins at D, which is completely colourless, and continues through Z, where noticeable yellow or brown tones become more visible.

Colour differences can often be very subtle, especially once a diamond is set in jewellery. Many beautifully balanced diamonds offer exceptional value while still appearing bright and white to the eye. Factors such as diamond shape, ring style, metal colour, and personal preference all play a role in determining the ideal colour grade for each customer.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the tiny internal and external characteristics naturally formed as a diamond develops deep within the earth. Internal features are called inclusions, while surface features are known as blemishes. Because diamonds are natural gemstones, these characteristics are completely normal and make each diamond unique.

Most clarity characteristics are microscopic and cannot be seen without magnification. In many cases, a diamond may appear completely flawless to the naked eye even though small inclusions are visible under a jeweller’s microscope. Our goal is always to help you find a diamond that appears beautiful to the eye while offering the best overall value.

Carat Weight

Carat is the measurement of a diamond’s weight, not necessarily its visible size. One carat equals 0.20 grams. While larger diamonds are more rare and valuable, carat weight alone does not determine a diamond’s beauty.

Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look very different depending on their cut, shape, and proportions. A well-cut diamond can often appear larger and more brilliant than a heavier diamond with poor proportions. Finding the right balance between carat weight and the other 3 C’s is an important part of choosing the perfect diamond.

Finding the Right Diamond

There is no single “perfect” combination of the 4 C’s — the best diamond is the one that feels right for you. Some customers prioritize maximum sparkle, while others focus on size or rarity. At  Inglis Jewellers, we take the time to guide you through the process and help you compare diamonds side by side so you can make a confident decision.

Whether you are selecting an engagement ring, anniversary gift, or a timeless piece to celebrate a special moment, our team is here to help you find a diamond that is beautiful, meaningful, and Forever Yours.
